In a small, struggling neighbourhood, there was a sense of hopelessness. The streets were lined with boarded-up business buildings and the community hit hard by the COVID was plagued by crime and poverty. Many residents had given up, believing that nothing would ever change.
Among them was Edwina, a single mother who worked long hours at a diner to provide for her two children. Despite her own struggles, Edwina had a heart full of compassion. She often dreamed of doing something to help her community, but she felt powerless. “What can I do?” she wondered. “I’m just one person.”
One Sunday, Edwina attended a church service nearby, Singleton Drive, Grange Farm. The lady pastor spoke about Matthew 5:14: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
“God has called each of us to be a light,” the lady pastor said. “Even the smallest light can pierce the darkest night. You don’t have to do everything, just start where you are, with what you have.”
Edwina felt a spark of hope. She realized that she didn’t need to fix everything, she just needed to shine her light, however small it might seem.
Edwina decided to start small. She began by organizing a weekly meal for the children in her neighbourhood. Using her skills as a cook, she prepared simple but hearty meals and invited the kids to her home. At first, only a few came, but word spread quickly, and soon her living room was filled with laughter and chatter.
The children loved Edwina’s cooking, but they also loved her kindness. She listened to their stories, helped them with homework, and reminded them that they were loved and valued.
Edwina’s small act of kindness began to inspire others. A local grocer donated food for the meals, and a retired teacher volunteered to help with tutoring. The neighbourhood started to come together, and the sense of hopelessness began to fade.
One evening, as Edwina was cleaning up after the meal, a young boy named Kwesi approached her. “Miss Edwina,” he said, “you’re like a light in this neighbourhood. You make everything better.”
Tears filled Edwina’s eyes. “Thank you, Kwesi,” she said. “But it’s not just me. We’re all lights, and together, we can make this place shine.”
Years later, the neighbourhood had transformed. The boarded-up buildings were replaced with community gardens and a youth center. Crime had decreased, and the streets were filled with laughter and hope.
Edwina stood in the center of the neighbourhood, watching as children played and families gathered. She opened her Bible to Matthew 5:14 and read aloud: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
“Thank You, Lord,” she whispered. “You’ve shown me that even the smallest light can change the world.”
Each of us is called to be a light in the world, shining God’s love and hope in the darkest places. When we step out in faith, even small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect, transforming lives and communities. As Matthew 5:14 reminds us, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Heavenly Father, I lift up the reader to You today, asking for the courage to shine Your light in the world. When darkness surrounds them, remind them that even the smallest seed can make a difference. Help them to love others with Your love and to bring hope to those who need it most. Thank You for calling them to be a seed in this world. In Jesus Name, Amen
