Emma sat at her kitchen table, staring at the stack of unpaid bills and the eviction notice that had arrived that morning. Life had been a series of setbacks lately. She had lost her job six months ago, and despite countless applications, no one seemed willing to hire her. Her car had broken down, and her savings were nearly gone. To make matters worse, her young son, Liam, had been struggling in school, and she felt powerless to help him.
“God, where are You?” she whispered, tears streaming down her face. “I’m trying to have faith, but it’s so hard when everything is falling apart.”
One Sunday, Emma reluctantly attended a church service held at Singleton Drive, Grange Farm in Milton Keynes at the invitation of a neighbour. The lady pastor spoke about Matthew 9:29 : “According to your faith, let it be done to you.” She explained that faith wasn’t about having all the answers but trusting God even when the path ahead seemed impossible.
“Faith,” the lady pastor said, “is taking one small step forward, even when you can’t see the whole staircase. It’s believing that God is working, even in the unseen.”
Emma’s heart stirred. She had been praying for a miracle, but maybe God was asking her to take a step of faith first.
The next morning, Emma decided to act on her faith. She called the local community centre and volunteered to help with their after-school program. It wasn’t paid work, but it gave her a sense of purpose and allowed her to spend more time with Liam. She also started a small online business, selling handmade crafts she created during her free time.
It wasn’t easy. There were days when she felt like giving up, but she clung to the promise of Matthew 9:29. “According to my faith,” she would remind herself, “let it be done.”
One evening, as Emma was helping Liam with his homework, she noticed a flyer for a local job fair. She hesitated, her confidence had taken a hit after so many rejections, but she decided to go, trusting that God would open the right door.
At the job fair, she met Sarah, the owner of a small marketing firm. Sarah was impressed by Emma’s creativity and determination, especially when she shared about her online business. “We’re looking for someone with your skills,” Sarah said. “Would you be interested in joining our team?”
Emma could hardly believe it. The job was part-time at first, but it was a start, a step toward stability and hope.
Over the next few months, Emma’s life began to change. Her online business grew, and she was able to pay off some of her debts. Liam, inspired by his mother’s perseverance, started doing better in school. Emma even began volunteering at the community centre on weekends, sharing her story of faith with others who were struggling.
One evening, as she sat on her porch watching the sunset, Emma opened her Bible to Matthew 9:29. “According to your faith, let it be done to you,” she read aloud. Tears filled her eyes as she realized how far God had brought her. “Thank You, Lord,” she whispered. “You took my small steps of faith and turned them into something beautiful.”
Faith is not about having all the answers but trusting God to guide and provide, even in the midst of uncertainty. When we take small steps of faith, God can turn our struggles into stories of hope and restoration. As Matthew 9:29 reminds us, “According to your faith, let it be done to you.”
Heavenly Father I lift up the reader to You today, asking for the faith to trust You in the midst of their struggles. When life feels overwhelming, remind them that You are with them, guiding and providing. Help them to take small steps of faith, even when I can’t see the whole picture. Thank You for being a God who honours their faith and turns their trials into testimonies. Strengthen them to believe that, according to their faith, You will move in their life.
