In the quiet suburb of Woughton on the Green, there lived a man named Samuel. Samuel was known for his kindness and his steady, unwavering faith. But deep inside, Samuel carried a quiet ache, a sense of distance from God that he couldn’t quite explain. Though he attended church faithfully and prayed every day, he often felt spiritually dry, as if God’s presence was far away.

One evening, Samuel sat on his porch, gazing at the stars that dotted the dark sky. He felt a heaviness in his heart and whispered, “Lord, I know You’re here, but I just can’t feel You. I long for Your presence, for the joy and peace I’ve read about in Your Word. Please, show me that You’re near.”

As he opened his Bible, his eyes fell on Zephaniah 3:17:

“The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love, He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Samuel read the verse slowly, letting the words sink in. “He will rejoice over me with singing?” he thought. The idea that God delighted in him and loved him so deeply was overwhelming. That night, he prayed a simple prayer:

“Lord, help me to feel Your presence. Fill me with the joy, peace, and assurance of Your unfailing love.”

The next morning, Samuel decided to take a walk through the nearby woods, a place where he often felt closest to God. As he walked, he noticed the sunlight streaming through the trees, the gentle rustling of the leaves, and the distant song of a bird. A deep sense of peace began to settle over him, as if God’s creation was whispering, “I am here.”

Over the following days, Samuel made a habit of seeking quiet moments with God, whether on his porch, in the woods, or during prayer. He didn’t rush or try to force anything; instead, he simply rested in God’s presence. Slowly, his heart began to change. He noticed a new joy bubbling up inside him, a joy that didn’t depend on his circumstances but on the simple truth that God was with him.

One Sunday, during a church service in Singleton Drive Meeting Place, Milton Keynes, the talented solo artist (TSA) stood up majestically and sang about God’s unfailing love, a composition from Zephaniah 3:17. As her voice swelled, Samuel felt tears streaming down his face. For the first time in what felt like years, he was overwhelmed by the nearness of God. It was as if the words of Zephaniah 3:17 were being sung directly to his heart: “The Lord your God is with you… He will rejoice over you with singing.”

From that day forward, Samuel carried a deep sense of God’s presence with him. Challenges still came, life wasn’t always easy, but he faced them with a peace and assurance that could only come from knowing he was loved by the Mighty Warrior who saves.

Samuel’s newfound joy began to spill over into the lives of those around him. His neighbours noticed the light in his eyes and the calm in his spirit. Friends who were struggling came to him for encouragement, and Samuel always pointed them back to God’s unfailing love.

One evening, as Samuel sat around a campfire with his family, he shared his journey with them. “I used to think that feeling God’s presence was about doing all the right things, praying enough, reading enough Scripture. But I’ve learned that His presence isn’t something we earn. It’s a gift. He’s with us, always, even when we don’t feel it. And when we rest in His love, He fills our hearts with joy and peace that nothing in this world can take away.”

Samuel’s story reminds us of the promise in Zephaniah 3:17: that God is always near, delighting in us, loving us with an unfailing love, and rejoicing over us with singing. When we turn our hearts toward Him, we can experience the fullness of His presence, a presence that brings joy, peace, and the unshakable assurance that we are deeply and eternally loved.

And so, like Samuel, may we open our hearts to the Lord’s presence, trusting that He is with us, filling us with His joy, His peace, and His unfailing love.

Heavenly Father, I lift up the reader to You today, asking that You bless them with a deep and abiding awareness of Your holy presence; surround them with Your joy that is their strength and Your peace that surpasses all understanding, anchoring them in the unshakable assurance of Your unfailing love. Let them know in the depths of their spirit that You will never leave nor forsake them & may Your perfect love cast out every fear as Your Spirit fills them afresh.
