Afia sat alone in the dim light of her living room, her head resting on her hands. The tears had long since dried on her cheeks, but the ache in her chest remained. Life had been unkind lately. She had recently gone through a painful divorce, something she never imagined would happen to her. On top of that, she had lost her job just a month after the separation. It felt like everything in her life was crumbling all at once.
She had grown up hearing people talk about God’s faithfulness, about how joy comes in the morning, but those words felt distant and hollow now. Afia’s nights were long, filled with questions and doubts. “God,” she whispered into the silence, “where are You? How could You let this happen?”
One night, unable to sleep, Afia reached for her Bible. It had been a long time since she’d opened it, but something perhaps desperation pushed her to search for answers. As she flipped through the pages, her eyes fell on Psalm 30:5: “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
The verse struck a chord deep within her. She read it again, this time aloud. The words seemed to shine a light into her dark heart. “Weeping may stay for the night,” she repeated. “But rejoicing comes in the morning.”
Afia closed her eyes and thought about how her life felt like one endless night, a season of pain that wouldn’t end. But what if the verse was true? What if the morning would eventually come? What if God wasn’t finished with her story yet?
She decided to pray, even though she felt unsure of where to start. “Lord,” she said softly, “I don’t know how to get through this. I feel like I’m drowning in sadness. But if Your Word says joy will come, then I’ll trust You. Please, help me hold on until morning.”
The days that followed weren’t easy. Afia still woke up with an ache in her heart. But little by little, she began to see glimpses of hope. A friend called unexpectedly, offering words of encouragement. Her neighbour invited her to a Bible study, where she found a group of women who supported her and prayed for her. And one morning, while walking through the park, Afia noticed the sunrise in a way she never had before. The golden light broke through the clouds, and in that moment, she felt God whisper to her heart: “I am with you. The night won’t last forever.”
Afia realized that healing wasn’t instant, but it was happening. Each day, she felt a little stronger, a little more hopeful. She began to see that her pain, as overwhelming as it was, wouldn’t define her future. God was still writing her story and He promised that joy would come.
Months later, Afia looked back on that dark season of her life and marvelled at how far she had come. Her circumstances hadn’t changed overnight, but her heart had. She had learned to cling to God’s promises, even when everything else felt uncertain. And true to His Word, the morning had come. Joy had found her again, not because life was perfect, but because she had discovered the unshakable hope that comes from trusting God.
Now, Afia shares her story with others going through their own “nights.” She reminds them of Psalm 30:5, encouraging them to hold on, to trust that God’s joy is on the way, even if they can’t see it yet.
Heavenly Father, I lift up my dear reader who is in a season of weeping and pain. Just as You reminded Afia of Your promise in Psalm 30:5, remind them today that their night won’t last forever. Help them to hold on to Your Word, trusting that joy will come in the morning. Give them the strength to endure, Lord, and surround them with Your peace and comfort. Let them see glimpses of Your light breaking through the darkness, and remind them that You are always with them, even in their hardest moments. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
