Michael was a man who always started strong but struggled to follow through. Whether it was a new workout routine, a diet plan, or even a hobby he was excited about, his enthusiasm would burn bright at first, only to fizzle out after a few weeks. Deep down, he always knew this about himself, but he didn’t think it mattered much until it started to affect his faith.
A few months ago, Michael had attended a church revival camp that stirred his soul like never before. The worship was powerful, the sermons were inspiring and for the first time in years, Michael felt alive in his spirit. He made a commitment to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. He bought a new Bible, downloaded a devotional app and told everyone he knew about the changes he was making. It felt like a fresh start.
But as the weeks went by, life happened. Work became overwhelming, family obligations piled up and Michael found himself slipping back into old habits. His Bible started collecting dust on his nightstand and the excitement he once felt after the camp revival began to fade. He was frustrated with himself, wondering why he couldn’t sustain the faith he had so passionately embraced.
One Sunday, Michael reluctantly went to church, feeling guilty about how distant he had become. The lady pastor was teaching on the parable of the sower, specifically focusing on Matthew 13:20: “The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.”
The words hit Michael like a lightning bolt. He realized that he was the rocky ground Jesus was talking about. He had received God’s Word with joy, but his faith hadn’t taken root. It had been shallow, based on emotion rather than a deep, steady commitment. And when the distractions and pressures of life came, his faith had withered.
Michael sat in his car after the service, tears streaming down his face as he prayed, “God, I don’t want to be shallow anymore. I don’t want my faith to fade every time life gets hard. Teach me how to grow deep roots in You. Help me to stay committed, even when it’s not easy.”
From that moment, Michael decided to approach his faith differently. He realized that strong roots required consistent care. He committed to spending time in God’s Word every day, even if it was just a few minutes. He joined a small Bacenta bible study group at his church, where he found accountability and encouragement. He also started journaling his prayers, pouring out his heart to God and reflecting on how He was working in his life.
The process wasn’t always easy. There were days when Michael felt tired, unmotivated, or distracted. But he reminded himself that faith was like a seed, it needed time, patience, and nurturing to grow. Slowly but surely, Michael began to see changes. He felt more peace in his heart, more strength to face challenges, and a deeper connection to God.
Months later, during another church service, Michael looked back on his journey and realized how far he had come. His faith was no longer shallow or fleeting; it was growing stronger with each passing day. He understood now that true transformation wasn’t about an emotional high, it was about daily surrender, steady commitment, and trusting God through every season.
Michael’s story became a testimony to others who struggled with the same challenges. He encouraged them to let their faith take root, reminding them that deep roots produce lasting fruit.
Heavenly Father, I lift up my reader who may feel like their faith is on rocky ground, struggling to grow deep roots. Just as You taught Michael in Matthew 13:20, teach them how to nurture their faith daily. Help them to stay committed to You, even when life gets hard or distractions arise. Strengthen their foundation, Lord, so that their faith can withstand trials and bear fruit for Your glory. Remind them that growth takes time, but with You, all things are possible. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
