Araba had always prided herself on being a “good Christian.” She went to church every Sunday, read her Bible daily, and volunteered in her community. But there was one person in her life she couldn’t stand, her co-worker, Vida. Vida was loud, opinionated, and often critical, and every interaction with her left Araba frustrated and angry. Over time, Araba found herself avoiding Vida entirely, harbouring resentment every time their paths crossed.
One morning, during her quiet time with God, Araba read 1 John 2:9:
“Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.”
The verse hit Araba like a lightning bolt. She realized that while she had been walking through the motions of her faith, her unforgiveness and resentment toward Vida had left her in spiritual darkness. God’s Word was clear, there was no room for hatred or bitterness in the light of Christ. Araba had been claiming to walk in the light, yet her heart was filled with feelings that directly contradicted God’s call to love.
Convicted, Araba prayed, “Lord, I see now that my attitude toward Vida is not pleasing to You. I’ve been holding onto bitterness, and it’s keeping me from truly walking in Your light. Please help me to see Vida the way You see her, and give me the strength to let go of my resentment. Teach me how to love her, even when it’s hard.”
Over the next few weeks, Araba began to take small steps of obedience. She prayed for Vida daily, not for Vida to change, but for her own heart to soften. She started finding ways to show kindness to Vida, even when it felt awkward. Slowly, Araba’s perspective began to shift. She still found some of Vida’s behaviours challenging, but instead of frustration, she felt compassion. God was teaching her what it meant to truly walk in the light of love.
1 John 2:9 reminds us of the inseparable link between walking in God’s light and loving others. Claiming to be in the light while harbouring hatred or unforgiveness keeps us in spiritual darkness. God calls us to let go of bitterness and love even the difficult people in our lives. When we choose to love, we step into His light and reflect His character to the world.
Heavenly Father, Thank You for calling us to walk in Your light and for showing us what true love looks like. For the reader who is struggling with resentment, unforgiveness, or bitterness, I pray that You soften their heart. Help them to see others through Your eyes and to love, even when it’s hard. Give them the strength to let go of anything that keeps them in darkness and to walk fully in the light of Your love. Thank You for loving us, even when we fall short. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Let this story and prayer encourage you: If you’re struggling with feelings of resentment or hatred, know that God’s light is inviting you to let go. Forgiveness and love are not easy, but they are freeing. When we choose to love others, even those who challenge us, we reflect God’s light and step into the fullness of His grace. Trust Him to help you walk in love and light today, His strength is enough!
