Esi had always been busy. Between her demanding job, countless social commitments, and her obsession with staying on top of the latest trends, she rarely had a moment to slow down. She prided herself on being “successful,” but deep down, she often felt empty. Her life was full of accomplishments and possessions, yet she couldn’t shake a nagging sense that something was missing.

One Sunday, Esi’s friend invited her to church. Reluctantly, she went, thinking it would be a good way to check something off her “spiritual to-do list.” During the sermon, the lady pastor read from Exodus 20:2-3:
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”

Esi froze as the words echoed in her mind. She had always thought of “other gods” as idols from ancient times, but Lady Pastor Lisa explained that anything we prioritize above God work, money, success, even relationships can become an idol. Esi realized she had been serving many “gods” without even knowing it. Her job had become her god. Her possessions had become her god. Even her constant need for approval had become a god. She had put everything else before the God who had created her and loved her.

That night, Esi went home and sat quietly with her Bible. She prayed, “God, I didn’t even realize I had been putting so many things before You. Forgive me for chasing after things that can’t truly satisfy me. Help me to make You the center of my life, to trust You above all else, and to put away anything that takes Your place in my heart.”

As Esi began to reprioritize her life, she experienced a peace and fulfillment she had never known before. Her job was still important, but it no longer defined her worth. She enjoyed her possessions, but they no longer consumed her thoughts. By putting God first, she found the freedom and joy she had been searching for all along.

Exodus 20:2-3 reminds us that God is the one who delivers us from whatever enslaves us, and He alone deserves to be first in our lives. When we allow other things like work, money, relationships, or achievements to take His place, we miss out on the fullness of life He offers. But when we put Him first, everything else falls into its rightful place, and we experience true freedom and peace.

Heavenly Father, Thank You for being the God who delivers us from everything that enslaves us. For the reader who feels overwhelmed by the idols of work, success, approval, or possessions, I pray that You help them to put You first in their life. Remind them that You alone can satisfy the deepest longings of their heart. Give them the courage to let go of anything that has taken Your place and to live in the freedom and joy that comes from prioritizing You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let this story and prayer encourage you: If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or unsatisfied despite all your efforts, take a moment to reflect on what might be taking God’s place in your life. Is it work? Success? Approval? Entertainment? Whatever it is, know that God is inviting you to put Him first. When you do, you’ll find freedom, peace, and joy that no “other god” can provide. Trust Him, He is the one true God who delivers and loves you deeply.
