Abena sat in her favourite spot by the window, staring out at the rain as it drizzled against the glass. Her heart was heavy with guilt and regret. She had promised herself so many times that she would stay committed to her faith, but she kept falling back into old patterns. She would draw close to God for a short time, full of passion and promises, only to let the busyness of life pull her away. It felt like a cycle she couldn’t break. She whispered to herself, “Why can’t I stay faithful? Why does my love for God feel so fleeting?”
That evening, Abena opened her Bible and landed on Hosea 6:4:
“What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.”
The words hit her hard. She saw herself in the verse, her love for God had been like the morning mist, vanishing as quickly as it appeared. She imagined God’s heart breaking as He watched her drift away time and time again. But as she read further, she saw His deep desire for relationship. Abena realized that God wasn’t asking for perfection or empty rituals. He wanted her heart. He wanted her to know Him, to walk with Him in a real and lasting relationship. And even though her love had been fleeting, His love for her had never wavered.
Tears streamed down her face as she prayed: “Lord, I’m sorry for treating my relationship with You like an afterthought. I don’t want my love to be like the dew that disappears. Help me to stay close to You, to love You with my whole heart, and to walk with You every day. Thank You for loving me even when I fail.”
From that moment on, Abena made a commitment to nurture her relationship with God. She started each day in prayer and scripture, not out of obligation but out of a desire to know Him more. When she stumbled, she reminded herself of God’s faithfulness and returned to Him quickly, knowing He was always waiting with open arms. Over time, her love for Him grew deeper and more steadfast, no longer like the fleeting morning mist but like a steady stream that never runs dry.
Hosea 6:4 reminds us of how easily our love for God can fade when we let the distractions of life pull us away. But it also reveals God’s heart, He desires a real, lasting relationship with us, not temporary affection or empty rituals. Even when our love is fleeting, His love remains steadfast. He invites us to draw near to Him, again and again, and to build a relationship that is rooted in His unfailing love.
Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your unfailing love, even when our love is fleeting. For the reader who feels distant from You or caught in a cycle of inconsistency, I pray that You draw them close.
