It was a Monday morning, and Yaa was already overwhelmed. Her phone buzzed constantly with work emails, her kids were fighting over breakfast, and the pile of laundry she had meant to finish over the weekend still sat in the corner of the living room.
Lately, life felt like this every day, chaotic, stressful, and completely out of control. Yaa knew she wasn’t handling things well. She’d been short-tempered with her family, cutting corners at work, and ignoring that nagging voice inside her telling her to slow down and refocus.
That voice, her conscience, her inner compass, whatever she called it had been trying to get her attention for weeks. But Yaa, like so many of us, kept pushing it aside. “I’ll deal with it later,” she told herself. But “later” never came.
This situation isn’t unique to Yaa. In fact, it’s something many of us face every day. We feel the stress building, the inner voice nudging us to change course, but we ignore it. We get caught up in the busyness of life, thinking, “I’ve got this,” even as things start falling apart.
In 2 Kings 17:13-14, God gave the people of Israel repeated warnings to turn back, to listen, and to trust Him. But they ignored Him, choosing their own way instead.
“The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all his prophets and seers: ‘Turn from your evil ways. Obey my commands and decrees.’ But they would not listen and were as stiff-necked as their ancestors, who did not trust in the Lord their God.” 2 Kings 17:13-14
Though the verse is about Israel, the underlying lesson applies to our everyday lives: ignoring the warning signs, whether they come from a friend, your gut, or even God leads to consequences.
The phrase “stiff-necked” in the verse paints a picture of someone stubbornly refusing to change direction. Sound familiar? Think of how we often resist:
– At Work: You know you need to delegate tasks to avoid burnout, but you refuse because you’re convinced no one can do it as well as you.
– In Relationships: A friend points out that you’ve been distant or unkind, but instead of reflecting, you get defensive.
– In Personal Health: Your body is screaming at you to rest, eat better, or see a doctor, but you push through, thinking, “I don’t have time for that.”
– In Decision-Making: You feel deep down that you’re heading in the wrong direction, but admitting it feels too hard, so you keep going.
In each of these situations, we hear the warnings. We feel the nudge to change. But we resist because change is uncomfortable, admitting fault feels hard, and trusting someone else whether it’s God, a friend, or even ourselves feels risky.
When we ignore the signs, life often gets harder:
– Burnout: Ignoring stress and overworking ourselves leads to exhaustion, both physically and emotionally.
– Broken Relationships: Refusing to acknowledge our mistakes can damage trust and push people away.
– Health Issues: Neglecting self-care can lead to long-term health problems that could have been avoided.
– Missed Opportunities: Stubbornly clinging to the wrong path can cause us to miss out on better things whether it’s a career change, a healthier relationship, or personal growth.
Just like the people in 2 Kings, when we refuse to listen, the consequences often catch up with us.
The good news is that we don’t have to stay stuck. Here are practical steps to help us face everyday challenges and avoid the pitfalls of “stiff-necked” behavior:
1. Pause and Reflect
When life feels overwhelming, take a step back. Ask yourself:
– What’s really going on here?
– Am I ignoring a problem or warning sign?
– What needs to change?
Sometimes, just acknowledging the problem is the first step toward solving it.
2. Listen to the Nudges
Whether it’s advice from a trusted friend, a gut feeling, or a spiritual conviction, don’t dismiss those inner warnings. Pay attention to what they’re telling you.
3. Ask for Help
Stubbornness often comes from thinking we have to do everything alone. But asking for help whether from a mentor, therapist, friend, or God can make all the difference.
4. Be Willing to Change
Change is hard, but growth rarely happens without it. Whether it’s adjusting your priorities, admitting you were wrong, or letting go of control, be open to taking a different path.
5. Trust the Process
Sometimes, the hardest part is trusting that things will get better if you make the right changes. Let go of the need to control everything and trust that taking the right steps will lead to a better outcome.
Yaa’s story didn’t change overnight. But one evening, after a particularly exhausting day, she sat down and wrote out everything that was stressing her. She realized she’d been avoiding asking for help at work, snapping at her family because of her stress, and ignoring her own needs.
She decided to start small. The next day, she asked a coworker to help with a project. She apologized to her kids for being short-tempered and promised to spend more time with them. And she carved out ten minutes that evening to sit quietly and pray.
It wasn’t perfect, but it was a step in the right direction. And for the first time in weeks, Yaa felt a little lighter.
This passage is a reminder that ignoring the signs whether they come from God, our conscience, or those around us leads to more stress and problems. But when we take the time to listen, reflect, and act, we can break free from the cycle of stubbornness and start moving toward a healthier, more balanced life.
– Reflect Daily: At the end of each day, ask yourself, What went well? What could I have handled differently?
– Accept Feedback: Don’t dismiss advice or constructive criticism often, it’s exactly what we need to hear.
– Trust the Process: Change takes time. Focus on progress, not perfection.
May you have the wisdom to listen to the nudges in your life, the courage to make changes, and the faith to trust that better things are ahead. May you walk in peace, knowing that every step forward brings you closer to a life filled with balance, growth, and joy.

Heavenly Father, help me to listen when life nudges me to change. Give me the strength to face my challenges with humility, the courage to make the hard choices, and the trust to know that You are guiding me. Thank You for being patient with me as I grow. In Jesus Nam, Amen
