Kwaku was sitting in the back row of his high school auditorium during the senior assembly. The principal was giving his annual speech about making wise choices as students prepared to graduate and step into the next phase of their lives. But Kwaku wasn’t paying attention, his mind was spinning with other thoughts.
For weeks, his friends had been pressuring him to join them in some reckless plans for their graduation weekend. They wanted to rent a cabin far from town and throw a wild party, no rules, no limits. Kwaku wasn’t sure about it. On the one hand, he didn’t want to be the odd one out, the “boring guy” who said no. But on the other hand, something deep inside him told him it wasn’t the right path to take.
That night, Kwaku sat in his room, scrolling through social media. He saw posts from his friends hyping up the weekend, and the pressure felt even heavier. Frustrated, he grabbed his Bible from his nightstand and flipped it open, searching for guidance. His eyes landed on a verse in Proverbs:
“Listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path.” Proverbs 23:19
Kwaku paused, reading the verse aloud. “Set your heart on the right path.” The words hit him like a wake-up call. He realized he had a choice to make, not just about the graduation party, but about the kind of person he wanted to become.
Kwaku thought about the kind of life he wanted. He wanted to be someone with integrity, someone his parents could be proud of, and someone who honoured God with his choices. But the path his friends were encouraging him to take felt so tempting, it promised excitement, popularity, and acceptance.
He remembered something his lady pastor had once told him: “Wisdom isn’t just about knowing what’s right. It’s about choosing to act on it, even when it’s hard.”
Kwaku closed his eyes and prayed:
“Lord, I’m struggling right now. I want to make the right choice, but I feel so much pressure to follow the crowd. Help me to be wise. Help me to set my heart on the path You want for me.”
The next day, Kwaku texted his friends and told them he wouldn’t be going to the party. Predictably, the responses were harsh.
“Come on, man, don’t be lame.”
“Seriously? You’re just gonna stay home?”
“You’re missing out.”
Kwaku felt the sting of their words, but he reminded himself of Proverbs 23:19. He knew deep down that walking in wisdom sometimes required standing alone.
Instead of going to the party, Kwaku spent graduation weekend with his family. They went out for a special dinner, and his dad surprised him with a heartfelt letter, telling Kwaku how proud he was of the man he was becoming.
Later that weekend, Kwaku heard that the party had gotten out of control. Police had been called, and a few of his friends were facing serious consequences. Kwaku felt a wave of gratitude wash over him, gratitude for God’s guidance and for the peace that came from choosing the right path.
Proverbs 23:19 is a call to live intentionally. It reminds us that wisdom isn’t automatic, it’s a choice we make by setting our hearts and minds on the right path.
Here’s what this verse teaches us:
- Listen and Be Wise
Wisdom begins with listening to God’s Word, to wise counsel, and to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. - Set Your Heart on the Right Path
Wisdom isn’t just about avoiding the wrong path; it’s about intentionally choosing the right one. This requires focus, discipline, and a commitment to God’s ways. - Wisdom Requires Action
It’s not enough to know what’s right. We have to act on it, even when it’s hard or unpopular.
Practical Steps to Walk in Wisdom
- Seek God’s Guidance
Start each day with prayer, asking God to guide your thoughts, decisions, and actions. - Surround Yourself with Wise People
Spend time with people who encourage you to make good decisions and help you stay on the right path. - Pause Before You Act
Before making a decision, ask yourself: Does this align with God’s will? Will it bring honour to Him and to my life? - Stay Committed to the Right Path
Even when it’s hard, trust that God’s path leads to peace, purpose, and true fulfillment.
May you walk in wisdom and set your heart on the path that honours God. May He give you the strength to choose what is right, even when it’s difficult, and may you experience the peace that comes from following Him.
“Listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path.” Proverbs 23:19
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word, which guides me in wisdom. Help me to listen to Your voice and choose the path that leads to life. Strengthen me to stand firm in my decisions, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. May my life reflect Your glory and goodness. In Jesus Name, Amen.
