In the small, rugged village of Gr8rwood, nestled among rolling hills, lived a woman named Annie. Life in Gr8rwood was not easy, winters were harsh, the soil was rocky, and every harvest was a gamble. Annie, a widow in her thirties, had faced more challenges than most. She had lost her husband to illness and was left to care for her young daughter, Afia, on her own.
Despite the hardships, Annie was known throughout the village for her unwavering faith and her ability to find joy in even the smallest blessings. She often quoted her favourite verse from Psalm 23:
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
To Annie, this verse was a promise that even in the midst of struggle, God’s provision would never fail her.
One year, Gr8rwood faced an unrelenting drought. The streams dried up, the crops withered, and the villagers grew anxious. Annie’s small farm was no exception. Her vegetable garden, her only source of food and income, was reduced to parched soil.
One evening, as Annie looked over her barren fields, Afia tugged on her sleeve. “Mama, what are we going to eat? What if the rain never comes?”
Annie knelt down and held her daughter close. “Afia, do you remember what the Bible says? God prepares a table for us—even in the presence of our enemies. The drought may seem like an enemy right now, but God’s blessings are bigger than any challenge. He will take care of us.”
That night, Annie prayed: “Lord, I trust You. Even when the fields are empty, I know my cup overflows because of You. Show me how to see Your blessings in this season.”
The next morning, Annie woke to a knock at the door. It was her neighbour, Mrs. Nelson, carrying a basket of fresh eggs and a loaf of bread.
“I had extra this morning,” Mrs. Nelson said with a smile. “Thought you and Afia might need it.”
Annie’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you. This means more than you know.”
Later that day, Annie noticed a patch of wild blackberries growing near the edge of her property. Though she had walked that path many times, she had never seen the bushes before. Grateful for the discovery, she picked enough berries to make a small pie for her and Afia.
Over the next few weeks, small blessings continued to appear. A travelling merchant stopped by and offered to trade firewood for some of Annie’s handmade quilts. A friend from church sent a letter with Scriptures of encouragement and a small amount of money tucked inside.
Though the fields remained dry, Annie’s heart began to overflow with gratitude. She realised that God’s provision wasn’t always about abundance in the usual sense. Sometimes, it was about finding blessings in unexpected places and trusting that God would sustain her through every challenge.
Months passed, and just when it seemed the drought would never end, the rains finally came. The villagers rejoiced as the streams filled and the fields turned green again.
Annie planted seeds with Afia by her side, and this time the harvest was more abundant than ever before. As she gathered the ripe vegetables from her garden, Annie whispered a prayer: “Lord, You are faithful. Even in the hardest seasons, You prepared a table for me. My cup truly overflows.”
That evening, Annie invited her neighbours to a feast, using the first fruits of her harvest to prepare a meal. As they sat around the table, she shared her testimony of God’s provision during the drought.
“Sometimes,” Annie said, “we think blessings only come when life is easy. But even in the midst of challenges, God’s abundance is all around us. His blessings aren’t always what we expect, but they are always exactly what we need.”
The same God who fed thousands with a boy’s lunch still specialises in holy multiplication.
May you always find abundance and blessings, even in the midst of challenges. When life feels dry and barren, may God open your eyes to the unexpected ways He is providing for you. May you trust that His provision overflows in your life, preparing a table for you even in the presence of your struggles.
“Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” —Psalm 23:6
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my shepherd, my provider, and my source of strength. Even in the hardest seasons, You bless me with Your presence and provision. Help me to trust that my cup overflows because of Your goodness, not because of my circumstances. Open my eyes to the blessings around me, and use my life to reflect Your faithfulness to others. In Jesus Name, Amen.
