Kwabena had always dreamed of being successful. Whether it was in his career, relationships, or personal goals, he wanted to make an impact. But no matter how big his dreams were, life seemed to keep him stuck in the ordinary. He worked a simple job as a clerk at a local hardware store and while it wasn’t glamorous, it paid the bills. Still, Kwabena felt restless. Is this all there is for me? he often wondered, frustrated by the monotony of his daily life.
One evening, after another long day at work, Kwabena sat on his couch, scrolling through social media. His feed was full of people boasting about promotions, new business ventures and exciting opportunities. He sighed deeply and muttered, “Why not me, God? Why am I still stuck in this dead-end job?”
Feeling defeated, he opened his Bible for a bit of encouragement. His eyes landed on Proverbs 22:29: “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.”
The verse stopped him in his tracks. It wasn’t about dreaming big, it was about being excellent in what you were already doing. Kwabena felt a nudge in his spirit, as though God was saying, “Be faithful where you are, and I will take care of the rest.”
From that moment on, Kwabena made a decision. He would give his very best, not just when it felt important, but in every small task at work. Whether it was stocking shelves, helping a customer find the right tools, or sweeping the floor, Kwabena approached each task with care and diligence. At first, it felt pointless, after all, it was just a hardware store. But as the weeks went by, something began to change.
Customers started to notice Kwabena’s attention to detail and friendly demeanour. “You’re always so helpful,” one woman said as he carried a heavy bag of soil to her car. His manager began giving him more responsibilities, trusting him to train new employees and oversee inventory.
One day, a man in a sharp suit walked into the store. Kwabena greeted him with the same enthusiasm he showed every customer. The man explained that he was working on a big construction project and needed advice on the best materials to use. Kwabena took the time to walk him through his options, offering expert tips and solutions that impressed the man.
After they finished, the man handed Kwabena his business card. “You really know your stuff,” he said. “I’m looking for someone with your skills to manage supply logistics for my project. If you’re interested, give me a call.”
Kwabena stared at the card in disbelief. Was this really happening? He couldn’t help but remember Proverbs 22:29: “They will serve before kings.” While this man wasn’t a literal king, he represented an opportunity Kwabena never thought he’d have. His faithfulness in the small things had opened a door to something greater.
Kwabena accepted the position and quickly rose in his new career. But he never forgot the lesson he had learned at the hardware store. Excellence wasn’t about chasing big opportunities, it was about being diligent and faithful in the small ones. He realized that when he worked with integrity and skill, he wasn’t just serving people, he was honouring God.
Years later, when Kwabena was asked to speak at a leadership conference, he shared his story and quoted Proverbs 22:29. “Faithfulness in the little things prepares you for the big things,” he said. “If you want to stand before kings, start by being excellent right where you are.”
Heavenly Father, I pray for my reader who may feel stuck in the ordinary or insignificant. Remind them that nothing is too small when done with excellence and that You see their faithfulness. Help them to give their best in every task, knowing that You are preparing them for greater things. Teach them to trust Your timing and to work with integrity, always honouring You in their efforts. May their diligence open doors they never expected. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
