Akua sat on her porch, staring blankly at the foreclosure notice in her hands. Just a year ago, she had been living what felt like a perfect life, she had a stable job, a home she loved, and enough savings to feel secure. But a series of unexpected events, a layoff, mounting medical bills for her young daughter, and an unforeseen financial crisis had left her with nothing but questions and heartbreak. Her home was slipping away, her savings were gone, and she was terrified of what the future held.
That evening, Akua called her sister, venting her despair. “I don’t even know where to start. I’ve lost everything. I feel like there’s nothing left to fight for,” she confessed, tears streaming down her face. Her sister paused and gently said, “Akua, when David lost everything at Ziklag, he asked God if he should pursue the enemy, and God told him to go after it. God gave him the strength to recover everything that had been taken. Have you asked God what to do next?”
The next morning, Akua opened her Bible and read 1 Samuel 30:8:
“And David inquired of the Lord, ‘Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?’ ‘Pursue them,’ He answered. ‘You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.’”
The verse stirred something in Akua’s weary heart. David, too, had faced overwhelming loss, his home burned, his family taken, but instead of giving up, he sought God. Akua realized she had been trying to solve everything on her own, but she hadn’t yet asked God for guidance. She knelt and prayed, “Lord, I don’t know what to do. Should I pursue a way forward? Should I fight for what feels lost? Please show me the steps You want me to take.”
That prayer marked a turning point. Akua felt a spark of determination she hadn’t felt in months. She began to take small steps, trusting that God would guide her. She reached out to her mortgage company and explained her situation. She applied for every job she could find, even ones she felt unqualified for. She sought help from her church, who rallied around her with encouragement and resources.
It wasn’t easy, and there were moments she felt like giving up. But slowly, doors began to open. Akua was able to negotiate a payment plan for her home, and a friend helped her land a job she never expected to get. She didn’t just recover financially, she found herself growing spiritually as she trusted God through every step. And just as God had promised David victory, Akua found restoration in ways she never imagined. What felt lost was being rebuilt, stronger than before.
1 Samuel 30:8 reminds us that even in the face of devastating loss, God is faithful to guide us. When we feel like we’ve lost everything and don’t know what to do, the best thing we can do is seek Him. Just as God answered David, He will answer us, giving us the courage and direction to move forward. The path won’t always be easy, but when God says, “Pursue,” we can trust that He will lead us to victory and restoration.
