It had been a long year for Esi. She sat in her car in the parking lot, staring blankly at the rain streaking down her windshield. Her life, once so perfectly planned, felt like it had fallen apart piece by piece.
First came the layoffs at work, leaving her scrambling for a way to pay the bills. Then came the breakup with her fiancé, a man she had thought she’d spend forever with. To top it off, her mom’s health had taken a sudden turn, and Esi found herself spending sleepless nights at the hospital, praying for a miracle.
Esi had always considered herself a person of faith. She went to church, read her Bible occasionally, and prayed when things got tough. But this year had tested her in ways she never imagined.
Esi thought back to a conversation she’d had with her lady pastor months ago. She had been venting, frustrated with how unfair life felt.
“Why is this happening to me?” she had asked, her voice shaking. “I thought God was supposed to protect us.”
Her lady pastor, LP Esi had listened patiently before responding. “Esi, it’s easy to trust God when life is going well. But sometimes, it’s in the hardest moments that we truly see Him for who He is. It’s one thing to hear about God, it’s another to experience Him.”
At the time, Esi had nodded politely, but the words hadn’t sunk in. Now, sitting in her car with the weight of the past year pressing down on her, she finally understood what he meant.
A week ago, Esi had reached her breaking point. Exhausted and overwhelmed, she had pulled out her Bible for the first time in months. She flipped to the book of Job, drawn to his story of suffering.
As she read, she was struck by Job’s words in the final chapter:
“My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you.”
Job had gone through unimaginable pain, losing his family, his health, his wealth. Yet, in the end, he didn’t just know about God. He saw Him. He experienced God’s presence in a way that changed everything.
Esi closed the Bible and whispered a prayer: “God, I don’t understand why this is happening. But I want to see You in it. Help me trust You.”
Over the next few days, Esi began to notice small glimpses of God’s presence.
- When she felt completely alone, a friend unexpectedly called to check on her.
- When she was overwhelmed by hospital bills, a coworker sent her a gift card with a note saying, “Just thought you could use a little help.”
- On the nights when she couldn’t sleep, she found comfort in worship music, feeling a peace she couldn’t explain.
Slowly, Esi began to realize that even in her pain, God was there. He wasn’t distant or silent. He was walking through it with her.
Esi’s faith began to shift. Before, she had known about God, she’d heard stories of His faithfulness, read verses about His promises, and believed in Him. But now, her faith felt real and personal.
She no longer saw God as someone who only showed up when life was easy. Instead, she saw Him as a God who stayed close in the hardest moments, who whispered, “I’m with you,” when everything felt like it was falling apart.
Job’s words remind us that there’s a difference between knowing about God and experiencing Him. Life’s challenges often shift our perspective, allowing us to see God in deeper, more personal ways. Here’s how this applies to everyday life:
- Faith Grows in the Hard Times
It’s easy to trust God when life is smooth. But it’s in the trials that our faith is tested and strengthened. - God is Always Present
Even when it feels like God is silent, He’s working behind the scenes. Look for the small ways He shows up—through people, circumstances, or even a sense of peace. - Perspective Changes Everything
Challenges can shift how we see God, moving us from a surface-level understanding to a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him.
Months later, Esi sat in the same hospital parking lot, but this time she wasn’t overwhelmed by despair. Her mom was on the road to recovery, and Esi had found a new job that allowed her to pay the bills. Life still wasn’t perfect, but Esi no longer needed it to be.
As she looked out at the rain, she whispered, “God, I’ve always heard about You. But now, I’ve seen You. Thank You for walking with me, even when I didn’t realize it.”
May you find God’s presence in your hardest moments. May your faith grow deeper as you move from hearing about Him to experiencing Him. And may you see His love, grace, and faithfulness in every season of your life.
“My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you.” Job 42:5
Heavenly Father, I’ve heard about You, but I want to see You. Help me to trust You in the hard times and to look for Your presence in every moment. Strengthen my faith and draw me closer to You, even when life doesn’t make sense. Thank You for walking with me through it all. In Jesus Name, Amen.
May you see God’s presence in every season of your life and trust that He’s always with you!
