The sun was setting over the hills as Yaw walked home from another long and uneventful day at work. His job as a delivery driver was steady, but it felt monotonous. Every day was the same: pick up packages, drop them off, repeat.

Lately, Yaw had been feeling stuck, like his life didn’t have much meaning. He went to church every Sunday, but even that felt routine. He often wondered if God had a specific purpose for him or if he was just meant to drift along.

That evening, after dinner, Yaw sat on his couch with his Bible. He had been working through 1 Peter and was about to start chapter 2. As he read, one verse stopped him in his tracks:

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Yaw read the verse again, slowly. The words felt personal, almost like God was speaking directly to him.

Yaw couldn’t shake the feeling that this verse was meant to remind him of something he had forgotten: his identity in Christ. He grabbed his notebook and began breaking the verse down:

  1. Chosen People
Yaw realized that he wasn’t just another face in the crowd. God had specifically chosen him to be part of His family.
  2. A Royal Priesthood
As a believer, Yaw was called to represent God on earth to be a bridge between God and others, just as priests in the Old Testament had been.
  3. A Holy Nation
Yaw belonged to a group of people set apart for God’s purposes. His life wasn’t meant to blend in with the world; it was meant to shine with God’s truth and love.
  4. God’s Special Possession
This part struck Yaw deeply. He had always struggled with feeling insignificant, but this verse reminded him that he was treasured by God, valuable beyond measure.
  5. Called Out of Darkness into Light
Yaw thought back to his life before he met Christ. He had been lost, wandering in a darkness of doubt and emptiness. But God had rescued him, bringing him into a life of purpose and hope.

That night, Yaw prayed:

“Lord, thank You for reminding me who I am in You. I’ve been feeling so lost lately, but Your Word says I’m chosen, called, and loved. Help me to live like it. Show me how to declare Your praises and reflect Your light in everything I do.”

The next day, Yaw approached his work with a new mindset. He realised that even in his seemingly ordinary job, he had opportunities to share God’s love.

When he delivered packages, he made an effort to smile and engage with people, offering kind words and encouragement. He even began silently praying for the households he visited, asking God to bless and guide the people living there.

At church, Yaw stepped out of his comfort zone and joined the welcome team. He wanted to help others feel the sense of belonging that he had rediscovered in Christ.

Months later, Yaw’s life looked different, not because his circumstances had changed, but because his perspective had. He no longer felt insignificant or purposeless. He knew who he was in Christ, and that knowledge gave him confidence and joy.

One Sunday after church, a young man named Claude approached Yaw. “Hey, I just wanted to say thank you,” Claude said. “The first time I came here, you greeted me, and it made me feel like I belonged. I’ve been coming ever since, and it’s really changed my life.”

Yaw smiled, feeling a deep sense of gratitude. He realised that by living out his identity as part of God’s chosen people, he was making a difference, even in ways he didn’t always see.

1 Peter 2:9 is a powerful reminder of who we are in Christ and why we’re here. God has chosen us, set us apart, and called us to live for His glory.

Here’s what this verse teaches us:

  1. You Are Chosen
You’re not an accident or an afterthought. God specifically chose you to be part of His family.
  2. You Are Called to Represent Him
As part of a royal priesthood, you have the privilege of pointing others to God through your words, actions, and love.
  3. You Are Treasured
You are God’s special possession, deeply loved and valued by Him.
  4. You Have a Purpose
You’ve been called out of darkness into God’s wonderful light so that you can declare His praises and share His love with others.

May you walk confidently in your identity as God’s chosen child. May you remember that you are called, loved, and treasured, and may your life declare the praises of the One who has brought you into His marvelous light.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me and calling me out of darkness into Your light. Help me to live as part of Your royal priesthood, declaring Your praises and reflecting Your love in everything I do. Remind me daily of my identity in You, and give me the courage to share Your light with others. In Jesus Name, Amen.

May you live boldly as part of God’s chosen people, shining His light and declaring His praises to the world!
