Maria knelt by her bedside, her hands clasped tightly together. The room was quiet except for the hum of the ceiling fan and the faint sound of traffic outside her apartment. It was her usual prayer time, but tonight, Maria felt overwhelmed.
For months, she had been praying for her son, Kobena, who had drifted away from his faith and was caught up in a lifestyle that worried her deeply. Despite her pleading prayers, nothing seemed to change. Kobena barely spoke to her anymore, and when he did, his words were often sharp and distant.
Maria sighed, her shoulders slumping under the weight of discouragement. She glanced at her Bible on the nightstand, flipping it open to where she had left off in the Gospel of Luke. Her eyes fell on a verse she had underlined years ago:
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” Luke 18:1
The words seemed to leap off the page. Maria sat back and let them sink in. Always pray and not give up. It was a simple command, but one she desperately needed to hear.
As Maria read further, she came to the parable Jesus told in Luke 18:2-8. It was the story of a widow who kept coming to an unjust judge, asking him to grant her justice. The judge, who neither feared God nor cared about people, initially ignored her. But the widow didn’t stop. Day after day, she returned, pleading her case. Eventually, the judge gave in, not because he cared about her, but because he was tired of her persistence.
Jesus concluded the parable by saying:
“And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly.” Luke 18:7-8
Maria realized Jesus wasn’t comparing God to the unjust judge, He was contrasting them. If even a corrupt, uncaring judge would respond to persistence, how much more would a loving, faithful God answer the prayers of His children?
That night, Maria decided she wouldn’t give up. She would keep praying for Kobena, trusting that God was working even when she couldn’t see it.
She began to change her prayers, too. Instead of simply asking God to “fix” Kobena’s life, she started praying for his heart. She asked God to soften it, to draw Kobena back to Him, and to show her how to love her son unconditionally in the meantime.
Maria also began to pray for herself, asking for patience, faith, and the strength to persevere.
In the weeks that followed, there were no immediate breakthroughs. Kobena still seemed distant, and Maria’s prayers often felt like they were bouncing off the ceiling. But she clung to Luke 18:1, repeating it to herself whenever she felt like giving up: Always pray and not give up.
One evening, just as Maria was finishing her nightly prayers, her phone buzzed. It was a text from Kobena.
“Mom, I’ve been thinking about some of the stuff you used to say about God. Can we talk sometime?”

Maria’s story is a reminder of the power of persistent prayer. Jesus taught this lesson to His disciples because He knew how easy it is to lose heart when it feels like our prayers aren’t being answered. But Luke 18:1 encourages us to keep praying, to keep trusting, and to remember that God hears us, even when we can’t yet see the results.
