Ato stared at his planner, overwhelmed by the sheer number of tasks he had scheduled for the week. Meetings, deadlines, errands, he had filled every hour of every day, hoping to accomplish more and get ahead in life.
But deep down, Ato felt empty. It seemed like no matter how much he achieved, something was always missing. He was constantly living for the “next thing”, the next promotion, the next vacation but he rarely stopped to think about what really mattered.
One night, while scrolling through social media, he saw a post with the verse James 4:14:
“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
The words hit Ato like a wake-up call. He realized he had been so focused on chasing future goals that he wasn’t fully living in the present.
Ato couldn’t stop thinking about the verse. He looked up the full passage in James 4:13-15 and read:
“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’”
Ato reflected on two key truths from the passage:
- Life Is Fragile and Short
The phrase “you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes” reminded Ato of how fleeting life is. Just like a morning fog that disappears with the rising sun, our time on earth is short. Ato realized he had been living as though he had unlimited time. He was so focused on building his future that he wasn’t cherishing the moments right in front of him. - God’s Will Is What Matters
The verse challenged Ato to rethink his approach to life. Instead of making plans as though everything depended on him, he needed to rely on God’s guidance and trust in His will.
That night, Ato prayed: “Lord, I’ve been so focused on my own plans that I’ve forgotten to live for You. Help me to trust in Your will and to make the most of every moment You’ve given me. Teach me to live with purpose.”
Over the next few weeks, Ato began to change the way he approached life:
- Cherishing the Present
Ato started spending more time with his family and friends, making an effort to be fully present in conversations and moments. He realized that relationships were far more important than crossing items off his to-do list. - Seeking God’s Will
Instead of rushing into decisions, Ato began praying for God’s guidance. He learned to say, “If it is the Lord’s will,” before making plans, trusting that God’s purpose was better than his own. - Living with Eternal Perspective
Ato began to focus on what truly mattered, loving God, serving others, and living with integrity. He let go of the pressure to achieve for the sake of worldly success and instead pursued a life that honoured God.
James 4:14 reminds us of the brevity of life and the importance of living with God’s will in mind.
- Life is fragile and fleeting like a vapour, here one moment and gone the next. We don’t know what tomorrow holds, so we must make the most of today.
- God’s will is what truly matters. Instead of relying on our own plans, we should seek His guidance and trust in His purpose for our lives.
Living with this perspective helps us focus on what’s eternal and truly meaningful.
