Kwabena sat on the edge of his bed, his head in his hands. He felt like a failure. Despite his best efforts to change, he kept falling into the same patterns, anger, selfishness, and bitterness.
He had been trying to fix himself for years, reading self-help books, making promises to do better, and even attending church occasionally. But no matter how hard he tried, he still felt stuck. His heart felt heavy, hardened by years of disappointment and regret.
“God,” he muttered, staring at the floor, “why can’t I change? Why does my heart feel so cold? I want to be different, but I don’t know how.
That Sunday, Kwabena decided to attend church. He wasn’t expecting much, but he figured it couldn’t hurt. During the sermon, lady pastor Lisa read from Ezekiel 36:26:
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
The words struck Kwabena deeply. A new heart? A new spirit? He had always thought change was something he had to achieve on his own, but this verse suggested something different. God wasn’t asking him to fix his own heart, He was offering to do it for him.
LP Lisa explained, “This promise was given to the people of Israel, who had turned away from God. Their hearts had grown cold and hard, but God promised to transform them. He didn’t just want to clean them up on the outside, He wanted to renew them from the inside out. And that’s what He offers us through Jesus: a new heart, a new spirit, a new life.”
Kwabena felt a flicker of hope. Could God really change his heart?
That night, Kwabena knelt by his bed and prayed, truly opening his heart to God for the first time.
“God, I’m tired of trying to do this on my own. My heart feels so hard, so broken. Please, give me the new heart You promised. Fill me with Your Spirit and make me into the person You want me to be. I surrender everything to You.”
For the first time in years, Kwabena felt a glimmer of peace. It wasn’t dramatic, but it was real, a quiet assurance that God had heard his prayer.
Over the next few weeks, Kwabena began noticing small changes in his life.

Situations that once made him angry now brought compassion. When a coworker snapped at him, Kwabena responded with patience instead of defensiveness. He realized his heart was beginning to soften, and his reactions were changing. - A Desire for God
Kwabena began spending time in prayer and reading Scripture daily. He wasn’t just going through the motions, he genuinely wanted to know God. Verses like Ezekiel 36:26 became personal promises that strengthened his faith. - Healing Relationships
Kwabena reached out to people he had hurt in the past, his brother, an old friend, even a coworker he had clashed with. He apologized sincerely, and to his surprise, many of them forgave him. These reconciled relationships became a testament to the change God was working in his heart. - Freedom from Bitterness
One of the biggest shifts came when Kwabena forgave someone who had deeply hurt him years ago. For so long, he had clung to bitterness, but now, with God’s help, he was able to let it go.
Months later, Kwabena sat in his living room, reflecting on how much his life had changed. He wasn’t perfect, he still had struggles, but he was no longer the same person. His heart, once hard and cold, was now soft and open to God.
He smiled as he thought of Ezekiel 36:26:
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
God had kept His promise. He had taken Kwabena’s broken, hardened heart and replaced it with one that beat with love, compassion, and gratitude.
Kwabena’s story reminds us that real transformation doesn’t come from our efforts, it comes from God. When we surrender our hardened hearts to Him, He does what we can’t: He gives us a new heart and fills us with His Spirit.
If you feel stuck, like Kwabena did, know this: God doesn’t expect you to fix yourself. He invites you to come to Him, just as you are, and let Him do the work of renewal.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise to give me a new heart and a new spirit. Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to change on my own. I surrender my heart to You, my brokenness, my hardness, and my sin, and replace it with a heart that beats for You. Fill me with Your Spirit and help me to live a life that honours You.
