Tom sat in his car, gripping the steering wheel tightly as he stared at the office building in front of him. He had been sitting there for nearly twenty minutes, debating whether to go inside. Today was the day he was supposed to present his idea to the company’s leadership team a new marketing strategy he had worked on for weeks. But now, the fear of failure was paralyzing him.

What if they hate it? he muttered to himself. What if I mess up? What if I am just not good enough?

He thought about the promotion he had been working toward for years.

This presentation could be the key to earning it. But the thought of standing in front of the executives, risking rejection, made his stomach churn. Finally, Tom sighed, put the car in reverse, and drove away.

That evening, Tom sat at his kitchen table, staring at the stack of papers containing his presentation notes and research. He felt a pang of regret. Deep down, he knew that his idea had real potential and that he had let his fear rob him of the chance to share it.

As he flipped through the pages, his eyes landed on a sticky note his wife had left on the corner of the stack. On it, she had written a Bible verse:

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. Master, he said, I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. ”

Matthew 25:24-25 Tom frowned and read the verse again.

The words hit him harder than he expected.

In the story, Jesus described a servant who, out of fear, buried the talent he had been entrusted with instead of investing it. The servant’s fear had caused him to miss the opportunity to grow what he had been given.

Tom couldn’t help but see himself in the story. He had done the same thing, buried his talent out of fear of failure. Tom thought back to all the times fear had held him back. In college, he had wanted to join the debate team but never auditioned because he was afraid he wouldn’t make the cut. At work, he had stayed in his comfort zone, avoiding risks that could have helped him grow. Even in his personal life, he often held back from pursuing his dreams, convincing himself that failure wasn’t worth the risk. He realized that fear had been stealing opportunities from him for years.

Tom bowed his head and said a quiet prayer.

God, I’ve been letting fear control me for too long. I’ve buried the talents You’ve given me because I am afraid of failing. Please help me to trust You and to use the gifts You’ve entrusted to me. I don’t want to waste them anymore.

The next day, Tom walked into his manager’s office with a determined look on his face. Do you have a minute? he asked. His manager looked up from her desk.

Sure, Tom. What’s on your mind?

I need to apologize, Tom said. I was supposed to present an idea yesterday, but I let my nerves get the best of me. I’d still like to share it, if you ll let me.

His manager smiled. I was wondering why you didn’t show up. I am glad you came to me. Let’s schedule a time for you to present it’s never too late to share a good idea.

Tom felt a wave of relief. He had no idea how the presentation would go, but for the first time, he wasn’t focused on the outcome. Instead, he was focused on being faithful with what he had been given. Tom’s story reminds us that fear can rob us of the opportunities God has placed in our lives. Like the servant in Matthew 25:24-25, we often bury our talents because we re afraid of failure, rejection, or not being good enough. But Jesus calls us to step out in faith, trusting Him with the gifts He has entrusted to us.

Failure isn’t the enemy, fear is. When we take risks and use our talents, we honour God and open the door to growth and purpose.

May you find the courage to step out in faith and use the gifts God has entrusted to you. When fear tries to hold you back, may you remember that God is with you, guiding and equipping you every step of the way. Trust that your faithfulness will lead to blessings far greater than you can imagine.

“So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground.” Matthew 25:25

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gifts You’ve given me. Forgive me for the times I’ve let fear hold me back from using them. Help me to trust You and to step out boldly, knowing that You are with me. Teach me to be faithful with what You’ve entrusted to me, and use my efforts for Your glory. In Jesus Name, Amen.
