Robert sat on a park bench, staring at the city skyline as the sun dipped below the horizon. The world around him bustled with life cars honked, children laughed, and joggers passed by with earbuds in. But Robert felt strangely disconnected, as though he were watching life happen from the outside.

At 32, Robert’s life looked good on paper. He had a decent job at a marketing firm, a nice apartment and plenty of friends to share drinks with on the weekends. But deep down, he felt… lukewarm. There was no spark, no excitement, no deeper meaning driving his days.

He thought back to his childhood, to the days when he sat beside his grandmother in church. She had a vibrant faith, one that filled her with energy and joy. Robert used to believe in God like that, too. But now? He wasn’t sure where he stood. Faith wasn’t something he thought about much anymore.

That evening, as he scrolled through his phone, something caught his eye a message from an old friend, Kojo, inviting him to a Bacenta Bible study. Robert almost ignored it, but something about it tugged at him.

“Why not?” he muttered, typing a quick reply.

The following Thursday, Robert found himself sitting in Kojo’s living room with a small group of people. After some introductions, Kojo opened his Bible and began reading from Revelation 3:15-17:

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm neither hot nor cold I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.”

The words hit Robert like a punch to the gut. He shifted uncomfortably in his chair, hoping no one had noticed his reaction.

Kojo continued, “Jesus was speaking to the church in Laodicea here. They were wealthy and self-sufficient, but spiritually, they were empty. They were lukewarm going through the motions without real passion or purpose. And Jesus tells them, ‘That’s not enough. I want all of you, not half-hearted devotion.’”

Robert felt like Kojo had been reading his mind. Lukewarm. The word described him perfectly. He wasn’t against God, but he wasn’t for Him either. He was stuck in the middle, coasting through life without direction or fire.

That night, Robert couldn’t get the verse out of his head. He thought about his life how he had been chasing comfort and avoiding anything that felt too hard or too vulnerable. He thought about his job, where he worked just enough to get by without truly caring about the impact he made. He thought about his faith, or lack of it, and how he had pushed God to the sidelines of his life.

For the first time in a long time, Robert prayed.

“God,” he whispered, staring up at the ceiling of his apartment, “I don’t want to be lukewarm anymore. I don’t even know where to start, but I want my life to mean something. I want to be passionate about You again. Please help me.”

Robert started making small changes. He began reading his Bible for a few minutes each morning, letting God’s Word guide his thoughts. He joined Kojo’s Bible study group regularly, even when he felt tempted to skip.

At work, Robert decided to approach his job differently. Instead of just going through the motions, he began looking for ways to encourage his coworkers and bring value to his team. Slowly, he started to find joy in doing his work well.

One Sunday, Robert found himself back in church at the Meeting Place in Stacey Bushes for the first time in years. As the worship team sang, he felt something stir in his heart a warmth, a spark, a sense of God’s presence that he hadn’t felt in a long time.

Months later, Robert met Kojo for coffee and shared how much his life had changed.

“I used to think being lukewarm wasn’t so bad,” Robert admitted. “I wasn’t doing anything wrong, but I wasn’t fully alive either. Now I finally get it God doesn’t want me to settle for ‘just okay.’ He wants all of me. And honestly, so do I. Living with purpose feels so much better than just existing.”

Kojo smiled. “That’s the beauty of it. God doesn’t want us to stay comfortable He wants us to grow, to ignite a fire in our hearts that can’t be put out. And when we give Him our whole lives, He gives us something even better in return.”

Robert’s story reminds us that being spiritually lukewarm is a dangerous place to be. It’s easy to settle for comfort and avoid the deeper questions of life, but Jesus calls us to more. He wants us to live with passion, purpose, and a heart fully devoted to Him.

If you feel stuck in the middle, like Robert did, remember: it’s never too late to reignite your faith. God is always ready to meet you where you are and lead you into a life filled with meaning and joy.

May you never settle for being lukewarm. When life feels stagnant, may God ignite a fire in your heart that draws you closer to Him. May you live with passion, purpose, and the assurance that a life fully devoted to God is a life truly worth living.

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I’ve been lukewarm in my faith. Help me to live with passion, to seek You with all my heart, and to trust You with every part of my life. Ignite a fire in me that cannot be extinguished, and guide me to live a life that glorifies You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
