Dr. Jonathan Mensah stethoscope slipped from his fingers as he stared at the MRI results glowing on the screen. The tremor in his left hand, the one he’d blamed on exhaustion was Parkinson’s. At 42, with a thriving cardiology practice and twin boys starting Little League, the diagnosis felt like a death sentence.
The hospital chapel was empty when he collapsed onto the pew. His pager buzzed—another patient coding, but his hands refused to stop shaking. A Gideon Bible lay open to Nahum 1:7:
“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.”
Jonathan’s bitter laugh echoed off the walls. “Some refuge. You gave me hands to heal, now You’re taking them away?”
Six months later, Jonathan stood frozen outside the neurology rehab center, his white coat now replaced with a patient wristband. Inside, a wiry old man was teaching a teenager to tie shoes with arthritic fingers.
“Third try’s the charm, kid,” the man rasped. Jonathan recognised him—Dr. Benjamin “The Lion” Levy, the legendary neurosurgeon who’d pioneered techniques Jonathan still used. The man who’d disappeared from medicine a decade ago.
Levy’s gnarled hands demonstrated the knot. “Your hands will fail you. Your brain will betray you. But your purpose?” He tapped the boy’s chest. “That’s bulletproof.”
When their eyes met, Jonathan saw his future and his hope.
Three years later, Dr. Mensah adjusted his voice-activated computer in the teaching hospital amphitheater. His tremor was worse, but his lecture on adaptive surgical techniques had standing room only.
“Today’s demonstration,” he announced, “will be performed by my mentor.”
The crowd gasped as Levy now wheelchair-bound guided Jonathan’s hands via live feed. Together, they completed a delicate procedure neither could do alone.
Afterward, Jonathan held up his shaking hands. “My breakthrough wasn’t healing. It was learning God doesn’t need steady hands, just surrendered ones.”
Our limitations become His greatest platforms.
Heavenly Father, I praise You for Your unwavering faithfulness throughout every stage of life. You are my Creator, my Sustainer, and my Rescuer. I trust that You will carry me, no matter how heavy the burden. My breakthrough is secure, for You are the God who never lets go. In Jesus Name, Amen
