Sarah had always been a woman of action. A thriving business owner at 32, she was used to making things happen until the doctor’s diagnosis stopped her in her tracks. “Chronic fatigue syndrome. You’ll need to rest… possibly for months.”
Rest? Impossible. Her catering company was just taking off. Employees depended on her. Bills didn’t stop for sickness.
Lying on her couch one afternoon, too exhausted to even stand, she flipped open her Bible in frustration. Her eyes landed on Ecclesiastes 3:1
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
She scoffed. “What’s this season supposed to be, God? Uselessness?”
Forced stillness became her new normal. At first, Sarah raged against it—until small graces began appearing.
Her teenage niece, Abena, started visiting weekly, bringing soup and staying to talk. One afternoon, Abena admitted, “Aunt Sarah, I’ve been so lost lately. But when I’m with you, I feel… safe.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. Maybe this season wasn’t just about her.
Then came the call from Eric, her head chef. “Boss, we’ve got this. Let us step up.” To her shock, the business didn’t collapse, it grew stronger as her team rose to the challenge.
Eight months later, Sarah’s health improved enough for partial workdays. But she returned changed.
She noticed things she’d once missed, the nervous new dishwasher who needed encouragement, the elderly customer who just wanted conversation with her meal delivery. She began reshaping her business around people instead of just profits.
At Abena’s high school graduation, the girl hugged her tight. “You taught me more this year than anyone, just by being there.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that God appoints seasons—even the difficult ones. What feels like interruption may actually be divine preparation.
- Stillness has purpose. Some lessons can only be learned when we’re forced to stop.
- Our valleys water others’ gardens. Sarah’s season of weakness became Abena’s season of growth.
- Trust the Timer. God never wastes our waiting.
Heavenly Father, help us surrender our timelines to You. When we chafe against waiting, remind us that You ordain every moment. Teach us to find You in stillness as much as in action. And may we emerge from every season bearing fruit for Your glory. In Jesus Name, Amen
